Physical Education

The Mount de Sales Physical Education Department’s aim is reminiscent of the ancient Greek ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body. Movement studies and brain research shows that daily physical activity benefits student classroom performance and lifelong brain development. Students are exposed to a wide range of team and individual sports.

Physical Education

½ Credit, Grade 9

Students are given physical fitness tests to assess their individual levels of fitness and to track student improvement throughout the year. This fitness test is based on the President’s Challenge, which includes:

  • Curl-ups (sit-ups) to measure abdominal strength and endurance
  • Shuttle run to measure speed and agility
  • Pull-ups to measure upper body strength
  • Mile run to determine cardiovascular fitness

Activities include angle ball, badminton, basketball, bowling, flag football, floor hockey, jogging, soccer, softball, table tennis, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, team handball, along with various rhythmic activities.

Health

>½ Credit, Grade 9

Ninth grade students are required by the state of Georgia to take a semester of Health. This Health Class represents the last official effort of our school system to inform young people of the benefits of good health habits as well as the perils of poor health habits. Topics include:

  • Personal responsibility for health
  • Mental health
  • Family and social health
  • Life cycle
  • Nutrition
  • Medicines and drugs
  • Diseases

The course also includes the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program required by the State of Georgia to receive a driver’s license.

Fitness and Conditioning

½ Credit, Grade 11,12

Prequisite: Physical Education; may be taken more once for credit.

This elective emphasizes more intense weight training and conditioning geared towards athletics.
