For more than 140 years, Mount de Sales has encouraged academic excellence, service to one’s community, and inclusivity among students. The graduating class of 2019 included more than 100 young men and women who now attend a variety of colleges and universities across the United States. In our Five Faces Feature, you will get to know several of our youngest alumni who were nominated by faculty and staff as outstanding representatives of Mount de Sales Academy.
Abby Smith attends Dartmouth College where she studies art history and plans to become an art curator at a prestigious museum. During her time at Mount de Sales, Abby interned at the Macon Museum of Arts & Sciences once a week, leading group tours and planning activities to further engage visitors. Missing a full day of classes each week was challenging, but she shared her love of art with museum visitors and maintained impressive grades.
Though many colleges began the new academic year in August, Abby only recently moved to Hanover as Dartmouth is on the quarter system. While in college, Abby will continue to pursue her love of French. In 2017, she spent a month at St. Denis International School in France to immerse herself in the culture and language. She also hosted two French exchange students at MDS and visited France again in the spring of 2019.
MDS French teacher Mr. Alex Hutchins said, “Abby went above and beyond in her studies for French. It is a beautiful thing to see a student take what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in real life. Teachers don’t always get the opportunity to see how their students do with their subject, but I was fortunate to see Abby become an inspiration to other students studying French. I’m very proud of her.”
Abby seizes every opportunity she encounters, and there is no doubt that she will go on to do great things. Her love and genuine excitement for her interests are contagious, and she has a unique ability to make material captivating and enjoyable to learn. Wherever she ends up, her sense of humor, willingness to try and experience new things, and strong leadership abilities will be great assets and guarantee her success in any field.
