Mount de Sales is an anchor in the downtown community and is situated between the bustling downtown atmosphere and the booming growth and beauty of Mercer University. The Academy’s campus underwent a major transformation in 2014 and has that “small college campus” feel. Green spaces, student-focused areas, and new and renovated buildings all add to the charm of Mount de Sales. Sixth grader Merrill Long enjoys the edu-garden, prayer garden, and the open quad. She said, “I love this campus. Downtown Macon is amazing. There’s so much to do here, even when we’re not in school.”

Long is no stranger to Mount de Sales. She has been a summer camper since 2013, taking advantage of all the activities we offer at Camp Cavalier. Seeing some of our teachers and being on this familiar campus was comforting to her once she enrolled as a student. Long has made meaningful connections with fellow new students, many of whom are now her best friends. Meeting new people and building relationships are important to her. “Being a Cavalier means family. People are like my brothers and sisters here,” said Long. “It’s nice to have that.” Sixth grade is a melting pot of students, and at any given time, any one of the middle school classrooms will have 8 to 10 different elementary schools represented. Students entering into the 6th grade are not with classmates who have been together since pre-K. In all, our student body hails from 32 zip codes from within and around Middle Georgia. It’s a real-world experience for them as we welcome a mix of newcomers every year and students form lasting bonds with each other.

Mount de Sales offers a variety of clubs, sports, and academic classes, where students can explore their passions. Long is active in the school community as a member of the Middle School Environmental Club. She has been particularly fascinated by Principal Mike Franklin’s Art Through the Ages class. “I really love being creative!” said Long. She is looking forward to a new studio art class in 7th grade and growing in her other interests, such as theater—and, of course, meeting more new students.

The future is bright for students as they develop lifelong bonds with friends, explore newfound freedoms together, and discover all that MDS has to offer.
