“God bless that goal post!” That’s what Katie O’Brien Berg (2008) and Maggie O’Brien (2008) say when talking about the winning goal Maggie scored in the 2008 game to win the program’s first GISA AAA Girls’ Soccer State Championship.

The team—which was a very close-knit group of young women, most of whom had played soccer together since they were little—would pray together before and after games. Often those prayers and team meetings, referred to as the “Circle of Trust,” took place at the press box on the soccer field. When the opportunity became available to donate to the 20/20 Fund and to name the press box, the O’Brien family felt it was the perfect way for them to support Mount de Sales.

“Our best high school memories were made on that soccer field,” said Katie. “I can’t say enough good things about the academics and sports at Mount de Sales and how well they prepared me for college. I am the person I am today because I played sports, and I think it is important to invest in Mount de Sales’s athletic facilities so that students today and in the future will have the same opportunities.” Katie and Maggie followed in their mom’s footsteps by attending Mount de Sales. Nancy (Jean) O’Brien was a graduate of the Class of 1975.

The O’Brien family has enjoyed giving back to Mount de Sales in various ways. When Katie returned to Macon after graduating from law school she wanted to reconnect with the community and especially Mount de Sales. Katie quickly joined the alumni board and chaired her class reunion. She and Maggie have also shared their insights with current students at the annual alumni Career Day. Katie expressed her motivation for attending Career Day when she said, “I want to support the place that supported me.”

Katie O’Brien Berg is a Real Estate Closing Attorney at Martin Snow, LLP in Macon, Georgia.

Maggie O’Brien is a Career Consultant at the University of Georgia Career Center in Athens, Georgia.
