The process of academic advisement and course selection for the 2018 – 2019 academic year will begin in early February and continue through March for current Mount de Sales students. The process involves a variety of strategies to inform both students and parents of the protocol and options as students make decisions about their future. Particular attention is given to delivering pertinent information in multiple formats, including large-group meetings, small-group question and answer sessions, and individual appointments, where necessary or requested.

Each year, MDS offers new courses and academic programs that impact course offerings and options for students, and we continue to look for ways to engage students in the process early and give them time and opportunity to ask questions, investigate options, and select courses wisely for the upcoming school year.

This year, we are bolstering our efforts to involve parents in the process to a greater extent.   Whereas parents have always had the option of assisting students with the course selection process via PowerSchool, we sense that parents are eager for more information and would appreciate being even further engaged in the process. To this end, we have scheduled two (2) orientation sessions by grade level exclusively for parents close to the time that students are receiving the same information in large and small group settings. Please note that parents of current 9th and 10th graders will meet concurrently.

Typically, the process of academic advisement in a college preparatory environment such as Mount de Sales involves much more than simply selecting courses that meet graduation requirements. College preparatory schools also focus on topics that inform the college selection process, such as resume and transcript building, the college application process via online tools such as Naviance™, and strategies that enhance student applications to the colleges of their choice. These topics are discussed in detail with students and parents during the meetings as planned.
