As a recent graduate of Mount de Sales, Zaire Morgan (’21) says, “without a doubt my proudest accomplishment has been creating the Diversity Awareness Club.” DAC was created in response to racial tension and the Black Lives Matter movement, political unrest, rise in unemployment, and heightened food insecurities. The club’s mission statement aims to give back and better the community within and around Mount de Sales through service and education. And that is just what it did.

DAC Gives Back

Over the last year DAC members have not only served, but have researched, discovered, lead, and learned from their experiences and from each other. Members solicited, collected, and donated women and children’s hygiene products to impoverished Latin communities, 25 boxes of meals during the winter holidays to Southfield Elementary, PPE to a local family-owned business, 12 boxes of supplies, clothing, and toys to the Macon Warming Center, and $138 to Feed the Fight, Atrium [Navicent Health]. The club also held educational lectures on food insecurity, the importance of respectful communication, Black Lives Matter, and COVID-19. Zaire’s previous international school-sponsored travel also allowed club members and the MDS community to connect with and learn about challenges in other countries, including Johannesburg, SA.

Grooming Future Leaders

In an ever changing and challenging world for young people, this group of students’ passions for service and support of their community is inspiring. These types of learning opportunities are what makes Mount de Sales unique, and are an important part of the development of future leaders who value responsibility, community, and relationships. Young people today are in a special place to make a difference, and it is important to have a supportive school community that will help nurture a child’s compassion for others and their own personal spiritual growth and development. Zaire is a wonderful example of compassion, leadership, and sharing one’s voice. He said he hopes the club will continue to grow and make an impact at Mount de Sales and in the community, “I can’t wait to see the growth and outreach of DAC in the future.”
