Mount de Sales Academy offers a comprehensive college preparatory program that begins as early as a student’s freshman year. Parents who choose this school for their high school education can expect a tailored approach designed to equip their children for future academic endeavors.

Early Guidance and Curriculum Planning

The college counseling process kicks off in ninth grade, with students meeting their college counselor to learn fundamental concepts related to college readiness. Key topics include understanding Grade Point Averages (GPA), the distinctions between “HOPE GPA” and cumulative GPA, and how the HOPE scholarship operates.

In the sophomore year, students delve deeper into their learning profiles, exploring study strategies and personality types to identify suitable career paths. For example, a student interested in engineering is encouraged to include calculus in their high school curriculum. These discussions about coursework begin early, ensuring that students are on track to meet the requirements of selective colleges.

Junior Year: Focus on Applications and Personal Narratives

The junior year marks a pivotal time in the college prep journey. The college counselor collaborates with junior English teachers to help students create and refine their high school resumes. This exercise allows students to visualize their accomplishments and identify areas for growth. At the end of the junior year, students also start crafting their personal essays, a crucial element of the college application process.

One of the hallmarks of Mount de Sales’ college prep program is its high rate of early applications. Approximately 85% of students submit their college applications early, typically between October 15 and November 15. This strategy positions them favorably in the admissions process, often ahead of the competition.

Building Strong Relationships

The foundation of Mount de Sales’ success lies in the relationships formed between students, teachers, and college counselors. Mrs. Alderman fosters a secure environment, encouraging open dialogue with families to align on academic goals. Additionally, the school maintains strong connections with local colleges and universities, such as UGA and Georgia Tech, which enhances students’ application experiences. Institutions recognize Mount de Sales students for their preparedness and potential, valuing the school’s recommendations during the admissions process.

A Focus on Lifelong Learning

The college prep program at Mount de Sales is designed not only to facilitate college admissions but also to cultivate lifelong learners. The curriculum from middle school through high school is aligned to ensure students are well-prepared for their future endeavors. Middle school teachers are mindful of high school expectations and introduce technology and study skills early on, giving students a head start. Moreover, students are encouraged to apply to at least one state school to take advantage of the HOPE scholarship. This proactive approach emphasizes the school’s philosophy that “nobody goes into debt for an undergraduate degree.” With a 100% college acceptance rate, students leave with a strong academic foundation and the skills necessary for success.

Language Proficiency as an Asset

Another significant advantage for Mount de Sales students is the early introduction of foreign languages. Beginning in eighth grade, students start their language studies, often reaching at least a level three of that language by the time they apply to colleges. This linguistic proficiency enhances their transcripts and bolsters their chances of acceptance.

Mount de Sales Academy’s college prep program is a well-rounded initiative that prepares students academically and emotionally for the challenges of higher education. By fostering strong relationships and aligning their curriculum with future goals, the school ensures that students are equipped for success in whatever path they choose.
