On a meaningful Thursday evening, a group of Cavaliers gathered on campus to take part in the Sleepout for Daybreak, an event designed to raise awareness and funds for those experiencing homelessness in Macon. The evening began with prayer and dinner before heading downtown to Daybreak for an inspiring program.
Following the program, students returned to campus. On the way in, they broke out into our fight song loud enough for most of the neighbors to hear! They were visited by Jeff Battcher, Communications Strategist and Corporate Advisor; Steve Daugherty, CEO of Piedmont Macon and Piedmont Macon North; and Sister Deborah, Director of Depaul USA Daybreak/Sheridan Health Center. These incredible leaders graciously shared their time and wisdom, reinforcing the importance of service and community. Their dedication to the people of Macon makes a difference, and the Cavaliers were able to ask questions and learn more about what it means to live a life of service.
The night continued with conversation and games, including a rousing game called Mafia led by Fr. Casey, a warm fire, and, of course, s’mores. As the Cavaliers settled in under the starry night sky, they embraced the challenge of sleeping outside, reflecting on the realities faced by over 45,000 students in Georgia.
The next morning, students and chaperones began their day with breakfast before heading off to class and work, carrying with them a greater understanding and a renewed sense of purpose. Students were thrilled to receive DayBreak t-shirts, which they proudly wore to school the next day. In a show of excitement and camaraderie, students signed President O’Kane’s t-shirt, creating a memorable and spirited moment.
This year’s Sleepout for Daybreak was particularly special as it coincided with Founders Day, serving as a tangible reminder of Mount de Sales Academy’s mission to educate and serve. Participating in this event required courage and commitment, and we are incredibly proud of our students for stepping up despite their many other responsibilities. As Fr. Casey reminded us, we must allow our hearts to be broken so that we can serve and make a difference where we can.
With this experience now part of our school’s story, we are excited to make the Sleepout an annual tradition. A dedicated student group will be working to expand our efforts in the coming years, aligning with our strategic vision to be the most invigorating, collaborative, and caring school. Christ calls us to serve, and our Cavaliers answer the call.
We are so proud of you, Cavaliers! Thank you to our students, chaperones, families, and special guests for making this night one of reflection, action, and service.
Forever de Sales!
