MDS STAR Student and Teacher Announced

A’nna Wilcox has been recognized as a 2022 Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Student. To obtain the STAR nomination, students must have the highest score in a single sitting on the two-part SAT and be in the top ten percent or among the top ten students of their class based on grade point average.

Wilcox was also named a National Merit Commended Student in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.Wilcox chose to honor Georgia Olson as her STAR Teacher, and said, “She believes in me and has helped me believe in myself. I hope to follow in her footsteps as a knowledgeable and successful woman in chemistry.” Olson, a veteran science teacher, said, “A’nna is an absolutely brilliant young woman. She is definitely gifted in the sciences but also has great artistic and theatrical talent.”

Wilcox has not decided on a college but is particularly interested in UNC-CHapel Hill, and she plans to study biochemistry with a career goal of pharmaceutical research. ” My goal is to study the molecular mechanisms of the human body and use that knowledge to develop treatments for diseases,” said Wilcox.
